Karluk Portage
Mission: Develop and promote stewardship, restoration and maintenance projects for trails.
Project Dates: August 2007-August 2010 Summary: This four year geoblock installation led by Koniag Inc. furnished a sustainable crossing of two miles of wetlands between the Karluk River drainage and the firmer soils of the Larsen Bay drainage. Years of degradation of the trail prior to this project prevented many village elders from accessing the Karluk river system and subsistence resources they have depended on for generations. With the trail now complete and continuous, the trail is once again passable for hikers and ATV users in all seasons. Funding Partners: Natural Resources Conservation Service, Polaris Inc. In-kind Partners: Koniag Inc., USFWS, National Park Service RTCA |
