Halibut Bay

Mission: Develop and promote stewardship, restoration and maintenance projects for trails.

Project Dates:  July 2011-July 2012

Summary:
This two week clean-up within the Kodiak NWR educated high school students about the impacts of marine debris, taught valuable skills of backcountry living, and resulted in over 3,000 lbs of marine debris removed from the beach--not bad considering crews can not use mechanized equipment within the Refuge. Besides valuable bear habitat, Halibut Bay supports two salmon streams and is near Steller Sealion critical habitat. It is also heavily impacted by marine debris.

Funding Partners:  USFWS, Youth Conservation Corps, Columbia Preparatory & Grammar School

In-kind Partners:  Boy Scout Troop 626, ALPAR Alaska
