The Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation and Island Trails Network are conducting a survey of marine debris on the islands of the Kodiak archipelago from the Trinity islands to Shuyak island. We need your help in identifying which areas are most heavily affected by floating ocean waste.

A worldwide problem

Marine debris carries toxins through the marine environment, impacts wildlife, and detracts from the natural beauty of the coastline of every ocean in the world.

Right here in Kodiak

The islands of the Kodiak archipelago are host to hundreds of tons of marine debris, including plastics, bottles, cans, and derelict fishing gear from all over the Pacific.

What you can do

Report marine debris deposits to Island Trails Network. ITN will be collecting reports through August 31st, 2007 and adding them to the MCA Foundation’s statewide database to guide future cleanup efforts.  You may submit reports through this website, by email, phone or regular mail.  High resolution photographs are highly desired, and may be emailed to the address below.

Our first marine debris cleanup occurred on May 12, 2007.  The Pillar Creek CoastWalk attracted over 60 volunteers and led to the removal of several tons of marine debris from the Pillar Creek beach area.  Following this survey, more volunteer opportunities may become available.  Please visit our website often and become a member to become more involved in ITN projects.

The objectives of the 2007 survey are to:

1. Identify and prioritize significant deposits within a 10-mile radius of a population center in the Kodiak area (includes 1 each for Kodiak city and surrounding villages of Old Harbor, Akhiok, Port Lions, Ouzinkie, Karluk and Larsen Bay).

2.  Identify and prioritize significant deposits in areas deemed by ITN to have significant recreational value.

3. Identify all significant deposits (>1 ton) in the Kodiak archipelago.

4. Identify the relative distribution of marine debris density in Kodiak, assigning each mile of coastline a value of 1-5 according to estimated density.

This survey is made possible by our partners:

Net Results

We are also seeking samples of derelict fishing nets. Please cut a one square foot section, note the location by GPS or common name, and either put them in the mail or call us for a pickup.
