MARINE DEBRIS REMOVAL
Setnet Pilot Project

MISSION

  • Develop and promote stewardship, restoration and maintenance projects for trails.
  •

    PROJECT DATES

  • June 2009-present
  • SUMMARY

  • In response, 18 participating fishing "Setnet" sites have conducted clean-ups at or near their sites during fishing closures and delivered the marine debris to their tender vessel in conjunction with regular salmon offloads. Faced with limited volunteer resources and funding available for marine debris removal, in 2009 ITN negotiated a nominal price of marine debris with the fishing fleet and agreed to hold the program open until the season ended or the quota of 10,000 lbs was met. This market-based solution to our limited volunteer resources and the increasing costs of marine debris clean-up and removal has tremendous growth potential, and we hope to continue the program in future years.
