About Us Island Trails Network is a 501c3 non-profit corporation formed in October 2006 to develop, maintain, and promote sustainable trail systems and wilderness recreation throughout the Kodiak Island Borough of Alaska. Our Board of Directors represent a cross-section of recreational interests in the Kodiak community. We are: Erin Whipple, President & Founding director (Term Expires 2010) Erin is the assistant manager of lands and natural resources for Koniag regional native corporation. Though she grew up in Alaska, she earned bachelor of science in Abused Land Rehabilitation from Montana State University before returning to make her home in Kodiak. Erin’s family—her husband Wes, daughter Tessa and a menagerie of animals too numerous to list—are avid trail users in both motorized and non-motorized activities. Patrick Saltonstall, Secretary & Founding director. (Term Expires 2010) Patrick is curator of the Alutiiq museum in Kodiak and a registered professional archaeologist. Patrick is an accomplished cross-country and downhill skier, boasting a ski ascent of Mt. Shishaldin, several first descents on Kodiak and skiing 209 days one year. Patrick and his wife Zoya have a 3-year old daughter Nora, 1 year old son Stuart, and 2 dogs. Robert Lachowsky, Treasurer. (Term Expires 2009) Rob currently works as a freelance building inspector and project manager. In 2006, he retired from the Coast Guard with 33 years of service, following a tour as the Kodiak base commander. He is a registered professional engineer, with a bachelor and master's degree in civil engineering. An avid hunter, fisherman, kayaker, and outdoorsman, he's most interested in maintaining and improving the health of Kodiak's environment, including the network of trails, beaches, and waterways. Rob and his wife Denise have one grown son. Pam Foreman, Founding director. (Term Expires 2009) Pam works as Community Relations Director for the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce. Originally from Minnesota, she has made the island her home for 18 years and spent as much of that time as possible outside. She enjoys hiking, kayaking, birding, wildlife viewing, fishing and camping. Pam writes and produces a weekly radio show on outdoor events called Island Byways, and serves on the KIB Parks & Recreation Committee. Pam's emphasis in serving on the board is building partnerships with land owners and agencies to preserve public access to existing trails, beaches and waterways. Ken Hansen (Term Expires 2008) Ken worked in the fish & wildlife departments of California and Oregon before coming to Kodiak in 1987, where he now heads the NOAA office of Fisheries Enforcement. He holds a BS in Natural Resources Planning & Interpretation from Humboldt State University. Ken had nearly completed Pacific Crest Trail (Mexico to Canada) in 1980 before his progress was halted by record snows and the eruption of Mount St. Helens. He hopes to complete the journey one day with his sons. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest Eagle Scout in US history. Ken lives in Kodiak with his wife and recently took up riding ATVs with his two teenage sons. Erin Harrington (Term Expires 2008) Erin has lived in Alaska for most of her life and grew up hiking and alpine skiing with her parents and brother. She has called Kodiak home for a decade, and currently works as a consultant and a writer. Erin holds a BA from Middlebury College, Vermont, in International Studies. Years spent longlining and jigging with her family led her to the University of Alaska for an MS in Seafood Marketing and Economics. Erin is an avid hiker, with dog Aja in tow, and muddles through backcountry skiing and mountain biking adventures with her partner, Ryan Johnson. Any leftover time is spent gardening, reading, and traveling. Brian Glaspell (Term Expires 2010) Brian moved from Anchorage to Kodiak in July 2007 to take the position of supervisory ranger/visitor services manager for Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.
